Recap of Nov trip to Tenerife Canary Islands

Post by davec » Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:31 am

We as in 1 kiter and 1 non kiter (Susan) both really enjoyed our month stay on the island of Tenerife. Nov is not the best month to go for wind but a great month if you like to travel in low tourist season. Weather is the same every day as it does not vary very much with day high of 22 and a low of 18. If windy on the weekend the water and beach are full of kites and windsurfers. One Sat I counted 100 kites and 60 windsurfers at 1 time. On the other hand on a light wind day or a foil day there were only a few kites out. El Medano is the only really good kite spot on this island which is where we stayed for 3 weeks. It is foil friendly as it gets deep close to shore. The waves and shore break are mild but if you go further out and more upwind you can have good waves.
We broke up our stay by renting a car to go sight see the rest of the island. The highest Mt in Spain has a huge effect on the climate. El Medano is on the dry side so rain is not a problem. The north west side of the island is both greener and wetter. There are about 7 kite shops and 4 windsurf shops. I used Azul and would highly recommend it. Ricardo the owner was very helpful and a real nice guy. Another plus to El Medano it is small enough you can walk to everything including the kite beach. We did not need a car while in El Medano. Food and beer were really cheap but also very good. The town had everything we needed and was a nice combination of tourists and locals. It is a safe place as we often went out for evening walks. We do plan to go back again and do recommend it to fellow kiters.

Thank you Dave for the review of your trip to that location. The pictures tell a nice story and it would tempt Margaret and i to go there by the favorable report you were so kind to put out here on Boost. There are still a few of us who believe in our website and continue to look at it and use it.
Welcome home, glad your injury is mostly healed and thanks for sharing.

Rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park is a big time sport .
The wind is free but the ' toys ' add up.

Nice report and photos Dave.

What's under all the huge canopies that I see on Satellite? Bananas? or is it Pot? :woot: :woot: 🤣

Thanks for the great report & photos on Tenerife.
It’s now on my list of foiling locations to visit....once I’ve got this foil board figured out.

Based on Azul’s Kiteboarding shop in the photo above, I think I found the kite beach you were using.

Which hotel did you stay at, or hotel recommendations based on proximity to the kiting area?

You were right Myron it is mostly bananas under all those green houses.
Neil we stayed at 4 different places in El Medano. All were in right in town which left a 15 minute walk along the boardwalk. I had wheels on my bag so it was easy.
Mark K I also met Jeremy Burlando who rides for Core. His Dad says he knows you from the Core dealers forum. Jeremy was foiling on a no wind day when I met them. https://www.jeremyburlando.com/
